Synopsis

This series will introduce participants to the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium, exploring its mission and goals. Attendees will also hear from our sponsors and student competition winners, who will share their personal journeys and experiences beyond the Lovelace Colloquium.

In the second of our BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium seminar series we turn the spotlight on our chair, Safia Barikzai and the event founder, Hannah Dee. We also talk to one of Safia’s students, Sarah Tucker, who’s attended several events as a student and has now joined the organising committee.

Speaker Biographies

Hannah Dee

Hannah Dee is a senior lecturer in computer science at Aberystwyth University. She founded the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium in 2008 when working as a post-doc at the University of Leeds, and she has acted as chair or deputy chair every year since (yes that’s 18 years). She also does teaching, a bit of research, and a lot of women-in-tech stuff. Recently she has gone part time in order to spend more of her life running up hills, rowing boats and writing stories. She was awarded MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2024 - for the women in tech stuff.

Safia Barikzai

Dr Safia Barikzai is Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies at London South Bank University. Safia has been championing inclusive and equitable Computing initiatives for over a decade. She is the current chair of the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium and has supported Lovelace for the past 10 years.

Sarah Tucker

Sarah is a first-year PhD student in Computer Science at London South Bank University (LSBU), following her recent graduation with distinction in an MSc in Applied Artificial Intelligence. She works part-time as a Teaching Assistant for Data Mining and Deep Learning, supporting level 6 and 7 students at LSBU. Sarah first attended BCSWomen Lovelace in 2024 in Liverpool and then again in 2025 in Glasgow, where she achieved shared second place for the master's category. Outside of academia, she enjoys baking, watching K-dramas and is developing Lib Motion, a redesigned cycle helmet aimed at improving comfort and safety for people with voluminous hair.
