Synopsis

Early Careers Spotlight: XAILUNG – Explainable AI as a Professional Responsibility

AI in oncology is often limited by the “black box” problem: high accuracy but low transparency.

Winner of the Silver Medal at Birmingham City University’s PGXPO 2026, XAILUNG is a multimodal deep learning framework developed as Joseph Ayodeji Atte’s MSc dissertation project. It fuses 3D imaging, 2D pathology and clinical metadata to achieve 94.2% accuracy, with built‑in explainability through Grad‑CAM and SHAP. FP16 optimisation enables ~10‑second inference, demonstrating real‑time inference potential.

This session explores how transparent, multi‑stream AI can move clinical decision support systems from experimental to deployable, with future potential for digital twin applications.

As part of the BCS Data Management specialist group's new Early Careers Spotlight, this event showcases emerging talent in data science and AI. Joseph is the first speaker in this new series, launched in response to our member survey highlighting a need for stronger connection with early‑career professionals. Look out for more Spotlight sessions throughout the year as we continue to champion the next generation of data and AI practitioners.

About the speaker

Joseph Ayodeji Atte is a rising AI Systems Engineer specialising in Explainable AI and Multimodal Deep Learning. A recent graduate with distinction from the MSc Computer Science programme at Birmingham City University and originally from Kogi State, Nigeria, he is driven by a commitment to making intelligent systems transparent, accountable and human‑centred.

Joseph’s work spans advanced deep learning, full‑stack engineering and the design of audit‑ready AI systems for high‑stakes environments. His research interests sit at the intersection of technical innovation and social impact, with a focus on building AI that people can understand and trust.

Beyond his engineering practice, Joseph is a multimedia storyteller who explores how technology can surface the narratives of underrepresented places and communities.

When he is not experimenting with new AI methods or creating digital content, he can often be found on the tennis court, pursuing his love for the game.
