Synopsis

Energy systems/networks are shifting from centralised to decentralised architectures with intermittent, uncertain distributed renewable energy sources and intelligent demand. Energy informatics aims to harness computer science and AI/ML to manage these uncertainties as a self-organised complex system. In this talk, we first review this paradigm shift and then discuss two use cases for energy informatics: predicting outages and failure cascades using AI models, and grid-friendly energy resource management.

In the first application, we discuss how physics constraints and previously collected outage logs can train an AI model to predict network behaviour under unseen stress testing during training or for predictive maintenance risk.

In the second application, we discuss how distributed energy resources, such as battery storage systems, can be operated in a grid-friendly manner to alleviate congestion and avoid costly grid reinforcement, using a two-stage control framework in which a global controller derives constraints to ensure active congestion relief and a local controller optimises resource setpoints to maximise self-consumption or revenue subject to these constraints.

About the speaker

Abdorasoul Ghasemi is an Associate Professor with the Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modelling, Coventry University, Coventry, UK. His research interests include AI for intelligent, resilient cyber-physical energy systems and networks, edge-AI, interdependent infrastructure network analysis, and network science and its engineering applications.

He has spent sabbatical leave with the Computer Science Department at the University of California, Davis, CA, USA (April 2017 to August 2018) and the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden, Germany (Dec. 2020 to July 2021).

He was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in July 2021, working on resilient cyber-physical energy systems at the University of Passau, Germany.
