This exciting programme of engaging webinars is a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals - clinicians, health informaticists, managers, researchers and students - to learn about Learning Health Systems from world-renowned experts. The fact is that most healthcare systems struggle to learn from the wealth of data, research evidence and hard-won experience at their disposal. Yet over the last fifteen years healthcare systems, organisations and teams have begun shifting the dial, developing their ability to learn from the routine care they deliver and improve it as a result. Featuring both local and international speakers, our webinars shine a light on exemplars from around the globe, identifying core principles as well as essential building blocks. Grounded in practical experience, the sessions explore real world examples across different clinical settings. The series also looks to the future – the transformational impact of Learning Health Systems and how we can harness AI.

Our expert speakers look under the bonnet of the Performance to Data, Data to Knowledge, Knowledge to Performance learning cycles of Learning Health Systems. Framing the series, they provide a helpful framework for designing and evaluating Learning Health Systems, probe the vital role of computable knowledge, and consider How AI will play into the lifecycle. The talk from Professor Philip Scott will look at the Human insights and computable knowledge in Learning Health Systems.

About the speakers

Tom Foley is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UCD School of Medicine, a Consultant Psychiatrist and National Clinical Lead for the HSE Community Care Record. Tom is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University, where he is founder and Principal Investigator on the Learning Healthcare Project (www.learninghealthcareproject.org), a resource for those developing Learning Health Systems. Before moving to Ireland in 2020, he was the Senior Clinical Lead for Data at NHS Digital and has been involved in Learning Health System related, clinical, operational and policy initiatives across both countries.

Vasa Curcin - biography to follow.

Professor Philip Scott is Programme Director of the MSc in Digital Transformation for the Health & Care Professions at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He was previously Reader in Health Informatics at the University of Portsmouth. Philip worked in the NHS in various IT development and management roles for fifteen years before moving into academia in 2009. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of Health Level Seven and board member of HL7 UK.
Philip is Deputy Editor of BMJ Health & Care Informatics and co-chair of the BCS working group on computable biomedical knowledge. He was co-chair of the Scientific Programme Committee for MedInfo 2021 and MedInfo 2023, the biennial IMIA global health informatics conference. Philip’s most recent publications can be viewed in the UWTSD research repository.
Philip has previously been chair of the evaluation working group of the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI), member of the steering groups for the NHS Digital Academy and the Global Digital Exemplar evaluation programme, non-executive Board member of the Professional Record Standards Body and member of the informatics committee of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Sue Lacey Bryant - Passionate about bringing knowledge to bear on decision-making to improve clinical outcomes, staff and patient experience, and productivity, Sue Lacey Bryant is Visiting Professor in Knowledge and Information Mobilisation at Manchester Metropolitan University. She convenes regular transatlantic roundtables debating hot topics.
Formerly Chief Knowledge Officer for NHS England, Sue is an Honorary Advisor to Health Innovation Network, Kent, Surrey Sussex with particular interests in Knowledge Mobilisation, Learning Health Systems (LHS) and AI. Also a KM adviser and consultant, a coach and mentor, Sue is a Leading Practitioner of FedIP and immediate past President of CILIP.
Widely published, Sue's recent publications include Actioning Actionable Knowledge, and Hand in Glove: Health Equity and LHS. Upcoming publications include contributions to books on leadership, and a chapter on AI and LHS in primary care.
