Kevin Ayres FBCS, Head of Test & Validation – Aerospace, Defence & Security, Sopra Steria, reflects on a career delivering mission-critical technology across policing, counter-terrorism, defence and government, and shares why BCS Fellowship, professional standards and a commitment to quality matter so much to him.
Having first encountered BCS while studying computer networking at Middlesex University, Kevin Ayres has maintained a connection with the organisation throughout his professional life, becoming a BCS member in 2003 and recently achieving Fellowship status. Today, as Head of Test and Quality Assurance at Sopra Steria, he is responsible for testing capability and assurance across aerospace, defence and security projects. Here he reflects on his career journey, the value of professionalism, and the challenges facing technology leaders in increasingly complex and highly regulated environments.
You have achieved BCS Fellowship status (FBCS). What does this recognition mean to you both personally and professionally?
From a personal perspective, Fellowship represents recognition of many years of commitment to the IT profession. I've always been passionate about personal and professional development, both for myself and for others. Throughout my career I've looked for opportunities to mentor people, whether formally or informally, and help them develop their careers. I used to take a particular interest in students on placement years, helping them think about possible career paths in technology and testing. I've benefited from people who took an interest in me and helped shape my career, so being in a position to do the same for others is something I value greatly. It's a way of paying that support forward.
Professionally, Fellowship is important because of the sectors I work in. In defence, policing and secure government environments, there is a strong emphasis on accountability, risk and professional standards. Fellowship demonstrates a commitment to these principles and provides evidence that you take both your responsibilities and your profession seriously.
Your career has involved leading testing and quality assurance across complex, multi-million-pound digital transformation programmes. What are the key lessons you've learned about delivering mission-critical technology successfully?
Digital transformation programmes are inherently complex. The projects I've worked on involve large numbers of users, significant operational impacts, complex system integrations and often multiple suppliers. They're frequently deployed into demanding operational environments where the outcomes are genuinely business-critical or mission-critical.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that quality cannot be treated as something that gets bolted on at the end of delivery. In more traditional approaches, testing is often seen as the final stage. The reality is that quality and assurance need to be embedded throughout the lifecycle.
As a testing leader, you often have to be quite forceful in protecting that principle. Programmes operate under significant delivery pressures, contractual milestones and commercial deadlines. When schedules become challenging, testing is sometimes viewed as a place where time can be recovered. That can be dangerous.
It's important to protect the time allocated to testing and assurance because ultimately, you're safeguarding the delivery outcomes of the programme. If you compromise quality, you risk compromising the success of the entire project.
In the defence sector, where reliability and security are paramount, how important is professionalism in IT, and what role do Chartership and BCS Fellowship play in maintaining high standards?
Professionalism is fundamental. In the defence and secure government sectors, you're often delivering systems that have direct operational impacts. Reliability and security aren't optional requirements; they're essential. The people designing, testing, assuring and operating those systems need more than technical competence. They need sound judgement, integrity and a clear understanding of their professional responsibilities.
That's where Chartership and BCS Fellowship become important. They demonstrate not only technical capability but also a commitment to professionalism and ethical practice. They show that you've chosen to align yourself with recognised professional standards and a code of conduct.
There is also an accountability aspect. Those post-nominals mean something. They provide visible evidence that you take your role, your career and your responsibilities seriously. In many situations, they help instil confidence in colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
Having worked on business-critical and mission-critical applications, solutions and infrastructure, how do you balance the pressure to innovate with the need for rigorous testing, assurance and risk management?
I don't believe that complexity, regulation or security requirements mean organisations cannot innovate. That's a misconception. Where there are opportunities to innovate in ways that improve reliability, security or delivery outcomes without introducing unacceptable levels of risk, organisations should absolutely pursue them.
The responsibility for leaders is to create an environment where innovation is encouraged while maintaining appropriate safeguards. Innovation shouldn't mean taking unnecessary risks. Instead, it should focus on finding better ways of delivering quality, resilience and value.
Particularly in large-scale enterprise environments, there is always pressure to adopt new approaches and technologies. The challenge is ensuring that innovation is implemented responsibly, with adequate assurance and a clear understanding of the risks involved.
For those technology professionals who aspire to become Fellows of BCS, what advice would you give to them about the skills, leadership qualities and professional reputation required to reach that level?
My advice would be not to focus on Fellowship itself as the primary goal. Instead, focus on making a meaningful contribution to the profession. Chartership demonstrates that you've achieved and maintained a high level of professional competence. Fellowship goes beyond that. It recognises people who have contributed to their profession and influenced others.
Develop deep expertise in your chosen field, but don't stop there. Commit to continuous learning and stay current with changes in technology. Look for opportunities to support and mentor those who are earlier in their careers.
It's also important to think beyond your immediate area of responsibility. Fellowship reflects leadership, accountability and influence. At a senior level, you're expected to contribute to organisational strategy, policy and decision-making rather than focusing solely on your own team or discipline.
Ultimately, Fellowship is about the impact you have on others and on the profession as a whole.
As digital transformation continues to reshape defence and other highly regulated industries, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing technology leaders?
Technology leaders face a combination of technical, operational and societal challenges. In highly regulated sectors, there are significant compliance requirements and often complex legacy systems that need modernising. At the same time, organisations are under pressure to improve user experiences, increase automation and adopt emerging technologies such as AI.
Cyber resilience is another major challenge. Modern programmes rarely involve a single supplier. Instead, they often depend on supplier ecosystems, which add both technical complexity and additional security considerations.
There are also broader pressures. Budget constraints, regulatory obligations and security requirements all need to be balanced against demands for faster delivery. Society has become accustomed to near-instant gratification, whether that's ordering products online or accessing digital services. Those expectations inevitably influence large-scale transformation programmes, even when the realities are far more complex. For technology leaders, transparency is therefore essential. Stakeholders need realistic expectations about what can be delivered and when.
Perhaps most importantly, organisations must not lose sight of the people who will ultimately use the technology. Too many transformation programmes become focused on the technology itself rather than the end user. If users aren't engaged early enough, solutions can fail to meet expectations regardless of how technically impressive they are.
Successful digital transformation depends not only on robust technology, but also on understanding the human needs that technology is intended to serve.
