The Director of Marketing and Brand is responsible for shaping and delivering a strategic marketing approach that strengthens BCS’s reputation as the professional body for the tech profession, grows membership, contributes to the growth of commercial income, and supports the Institute’s mission to make IT good for society.
Role responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and deliver a comprehensive marketing strategy, associated channel strategies and operational activity plans aligned to BCS’s purpose and strategic objectives.
- Act as a senior advisor to the Executive on marketing and brand.
- Lead and inspire a multidisciplinary marketing and brand team.
Brand
- Be the custodian of the BCS brand, responsible for brand identity and positioning, consistency, equity and awareness, employee and BCS Community alignment, performance monitoring and brand development.
- Develop and deliver the BCS brand strategy and manage its execution across all channels.
- Protect and enhance the BCS brand, positioning it as the authoritative voice for the tech profession.
- Develop brand awareness and shape how audiences view the brand.
- Foster repeat purchases and advocacy, increasing the number of customers/members who recommend the brand.
B2C Membership & Engagement Growth
- Working with the B2C Marketing Manager and Director of Membership & Volunteer Engagement, drive growth, retention, and engagement across individual and organisational membership.
- Develop segmented, insight-led campaigns for students, professionals, employers, and partners.
- Work closely with Membership Engagement, Product, and Policy teams to drive acquisition and progression pathways.
B2B
- Working with the B2B Marketing Manager and Executive Director, Sales, drive commercial growth, retention, and engagement across employer and training provider audiences.
- Oversee the development and implement of a high performing demand and lead generation plan and its measurement, along with segmented and insight led campaigns
- Oversee all marketing led sales enablement activities.
- Develop a communications and engagement strategy for BCS’ channel partners.
Events
- Lead the BCS events strategy and its execution.
- Ensure event investment clearly contributes to the BCS corporate and marketing strategies to grow the membership base and to grow commercially.
- Develop an annual events programme working closely with colleagues from Membership Engagement and Sales.
Digital, Content & Campaigns
- Work closely with Membership Engagement, Corporate Communications, Policy and Product teams, contribute to BCS’ content strategy including publications, research, events promotion, and member communications – utilising content assets in a content marketing strategy.
- Use data and analytics to continuously improve engagement and campaign effectiveness.
Stakeholder & Internal Engagement
- Collaborate closely with Membership & Volunteer Engagement, Product, Sales, Corporate Communications and Policy.
- Build strong relationships with external partners, sponsors, and stakeholders.
Governance, Budget & Performance
- Manage marketing budgets with strong governance and value-for-money focus.
- Establish KPIs and report impact to the Executive leadership team.
- Ensure compliance with charity governance, brand, and data protection standards.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide inspirational leadership by upholding BCS values, setting clear expectations, and leading by example to coach and develop others toward excellence.
- Lead, develop, and motivate a team responsible for marketing & brand across BCS and role model cross functional collaboration across senior leaders.
- Foster a continuous improvement mindset by encouraging innovation, challenging the status quo, and supporting learning and development within the team.
- Model flexibility and adaptability by remaining open to change, supporting others through transitions, and maintaining focus on outcomes.
Who are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Chartered membership of a Professional Body (e.g. CIM, IDM) or equivalent
- Significant senior marketing leadership experience, ideally within a membership body, professional institute, charity, or public-interest organisation
- Demonstrable experience in membership marketing, demand and lead generation, brand management, digital marketing, and integrated campaigns
- Proven experience leading the entire marketing function
- Experience working within technology, digital, or professional standards environments would be advantageous.
- Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate purpose into impactful marketing activity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong judgement and credibility
- Strong commercial and analytical thinking
- Outstanding planning and prioritisation skills
- Excellent influencing, stakeholder management, and communication skills
- High levels of integrity, discretion, and sound judgement
- Calm and authoritative under pressure
- Strong alignment with BCS’s mission to make IT good for society

- Understanding of membership models and audience engagement across career stages would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of technology, digital, or professional standards environments would be advantageous.

Travel in the UK will be required to attend events and meeting internal/external stakeholders.
