We are recruiting for a Head of Marketing & Communications to join our Membership Marketing division, in a permanent capacity, working full-time at our Swindon offices located on key transport links in the town centre.
About the role
The Head of Marketing & Communications is accountable for the development and delivery of the strategic marketing plan for the Institute, supporting the acquisition, engagement and retention of IT professionals, non-IT professionals in digital roles and organisations, as well as volunteer recruitment and engagement activities. This role will also include responsibility for growing our professional registers and promotion of the Chartered pathway.
Managing a team of marketing specialists, the Head of Marketing and Communications will work closely with the Director of Membership & Registrations, the Director of Corporate Engagement, Head of Community, Head of Content, and the central marketing and communication teams in order to deliver to identified KPIs – timely and within budget. This is a collaborative team who work flexibly with a ‘can do attitude’, always thinking ‘how could this be better?’.
Key responsibilities:
- Responsible for all aspects of the Institute Marketing department, implementing comprehensive marketing strategies to support innovation and growth;
- Lead a small team of marketeers in identifying the latest trends and technologies affecting our industry and customers in different specialisms within IT and strategic vertical sectors;
- Work with the Membership & Product team to successfully segment the market with different audience personas and customer groups, developing targeted value propositions and approaches;
- Plan, own and implement integrated digital campaigns to generate leads and drive acquisition for individual members and organisations;
- Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop a member and volunteer communications plan, using different channels and tools to drive participation;
- Develop partnership / account-based marketing campaigns for enterprise customers and strategic partners;
- Create and own marketing plans for professional registrations, member CPD and corporate partnerships;
- Develop retention and engagement strategies for members and volunteers;
- Create and lead an events and content programme (BCS-run and internal) to support acquisition and engagement;
- Oversee the management of member and volunteer communications and campaigns across different channels to drive active participation;
- Work in partnership with the brand team to ensure our brand programme supports Institute objectives;
- Measure and report performance of campaigns and assess against goals (ROI and KPI);
- Collaborate with internal teams to optimise user experience;
- Evaluate and improve the customer experience across multiple channels and touch points;
- Lead and manage a team of highly skilled marketing professionals providing guidance, feedback, and support;
- Control budgets and allocate resources appropriately;
- Develop strong working relationships with key BCS teams across the business; in particular those with a strong dependency on the success of marketing activity;
- Support and promote the BCS values of do the right thing, one team, make things better, make things happen and being human;
- Continually looking at ways to make improvements to systems, processes, and procedures;
- Flexibility is required of all job holders to adjust responsibilities as required from time to time by their Line Manager/Divisional Director;

Who are we looking for?
- Degree or professional qualification in a relevant field;
- Professional Chartered Marketer (CIM) would be advantageous.
- Demonstrable working experience in a strategic marketing role;
- Demonstrable experience of leading and managing a team of marketing professionals to drive required results;
- Demonstrable experience of planning and delivering external communications within a membership organisation highly desirable;
- Demonstrable experience in leading and managing integrated digital lead generation campaigns using a range of channels and tactics, including SEO, social media, display advertising, sponsorship;
- Demonstrable experience of content generation, content marketing and thought leadership programmes;
- Proven experience of events management (in-house and external);
- Proven experience of owning and managing a marketing budget and delivering strong ROI;
- Proven Experience of reporting against ROI and KPI targets to key stakeholders;
- Proven experience of digital marketing, including A/B and multivariable experiments, ad serving tools, setting up and optimising google AdWords campaigns.

- Up to date with current online marketing techniques and best practices;
- Up to date with relevant legislation around Data Protection, Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, Advertising Standards Codes of practice, Cookie Law etc;
- Understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and content management systems.
- You may be required to travel in the UK/Internationally with the occasional overnight stay and there will be out of hours working, including attending events and presentations.
