We are looking for a Sub Editor to join our Content & Insight department on a temporary fixed-term contract, working full-time.

About the role

The Sub Editor is responsible for our editorial quality. They’ll also need to ensure that our products and processes run smoothly and to deadline. The role needs a keen eye for spelling, grammar, consistency and, equally, a love for making systems and processes run smoothly.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working with volunteers’ writers and contributors to polish their copy;
  • Striving for the best editorial quality through reading pieces critically, raising queries with writers / editors;
  • Checking and correcting articles for spelling, grammar, house-style and punctuation;
  • Ensuring there’s a regular and even flow of articles appearing on the BCS website;
  • Making sure ITNOW – BCS’ print magazine – arrives complete, finished and with the printers. This involves:
    • Sub editing articles;
    • Fixing copy so it complies with our style guide;
    • Cutting copy so it fits into InDesign grids / space requirements;
    • Producing and marking-up final PDFs and sending these to our printers (on time and with the correct technical settings).
  • Supporting the smooth running of ITNOW’s flatplan (central editorial plan for each issue);
  • Fix copy in Adobe InDesign;
  • Establish, manage and maintain day to day relationships with BCS members, writers, third party suppliers and collaborators;
  • Contribute to ensuring all content complies with libel laws, copyright and accessibility rules;
  • Continually looking at ways to make improvements to systems, processes and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the IT industry is a bonus but not essential;
  • All staff will live the BCS values and support our purpose;
  • Flexibility is required of all job holders to adjust responsibilities as required from time to time by their Line Manager/Divisional Director;
  • The content and reporting lines detailed in this job description may be reviewed and changed from time to time to reflect organisational requirements.

Who are we looking for?

Education and qualifications
  • Degree level education or equivalent.
Experience
  • Proven journalistic experience;
  • Proven sub-editing skills.
Competencies and skills
  • Solid level of skill with core Adobe CC packages: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign (training can be provided);
  • Excellent Microsoft office skills;
  • Sub-editing skills;
  • Very high attention to detail;
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to build and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines;
  • Ability to manage own schedule, workload and to achieve agreed objectives with the minimum of supervision;
  • Project management.
Knowledge
  • Sound knowledge of publishing and media software;
  • Adobe CC – InDesign (good working knowledge) and Photoshop (proficient);
  • Knowledge of the IT industry (not essential but a bonus).
Special conditions
  • Some UK travel will be required as well as some evening work.
