The Alliance for Data Science Professionals (AfDSP) has launched a new University Accreditation scheme, following a successful early adopter phase with the Open University and the University of East London.

The scheme means that, for the first time, degrees which feature substantial elements of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing, as well as ethical practice, can be recognised as meeting independent professional standards set by Data Science alliance member organisations.

Graduates will become eligible to apply for the Data Science Professional (DSP) title through either the Royal Statistical Society, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the Operational Research Society or BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

Since launching in 2021, the Alliance has introduced two professional titles, Data Science Professional, and Advanced Data Science Professional, and is working closely with the Privy Council, with the aim of establishing a future Chartered Data Science Professional award.

This latest milestone helps ensure the next generation of data scientists are trained to the highest standards of technical expertise, ethics, and professional conduct, giving students, universities, employers and the public confidence in the profession. Both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees can be eligible for professional data science accreditation

Professor Edward Rochead CMath FIMA, Chair, the Alliance for Data Science Professionals said: “The launch of the Alliance’s University Accreditation scheme marks a major step forward for the data science profession. By setting clear, rigorous standards for degree programmes, we’re helping to ensure that graduates enter the workforce with not only the technical skills, but also the ethical grounding and professional mindset our society needs. I am proud to chair the Alliance, which is giving students, universities, and employers confidence that accredited programmes truly prepare the next generation of data scientists to make a positive impact.”

Julia Adamson MBE, Executive Director for Education at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT said: “Data science is at the heart of innovation and decision-making in every sector. For students and professionals in this field, clear pathways to professional recognition are essential. They validate expertise, uphold ethical standards, and build trust in the insights delivered. Universities offering data science degrees can strengthen these pathways by seeking AfDSP accreditation through BCS, ensuring their graduates are aligned with industry standards.”

Dr Sarah Cumbers, Chief Executive, The Royal Statistical Society said: “By embedding professional standards into university programmes, we’re ensuring that graduates enter the field with the technical excellence and ethical awareness society demands. The Royal Statistical Society is proud to play a central role in this initiative, helping to uphold rigorous standards and strengthen trust in the profession.”
