Event Synopsis:

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a significant revamp of data protection laws that have been designed and invoked by the EU. It was invoked in May 2016 and will be enforced from May 2018. It imposes significantly increased responsibilities on Data Controlling and Data Processing businesses that come under the Data Protection Act 1998, but not limited to. Penalties for noncompliance are much harsher, up to 4% of global turnover or Euro 20 mill whichever is the larger figure. This could have a real impact on your business, but not if you get prepared now. However it will take some effort, so you need to learn about it now and start your compliance projects if you have not already done so, to meet the May 25th deadline.

Some questions that you might have :

  • What is it?
  • Will it affect me?
  • Our customers are not asking for it?
  • Are we just getting over excited by this?
  • After Brexit, surely it will not apply?
  • How is it different to the DPA?
  • Is there much work involved, particularly for SMEs?
  • Will there be penalties?

Regarding implementation:

  • What do I need to do?
  • How long is it likely to take?
  • Who do I need to involve?
  • What do I need to look out for?
  • What does project success look like?
