IT is a key economic sector for the UK. As outlined in the government’s UK Digital Strategy it “is one of the UK’s most important sectors - important not just for its value to the UK economy, but also for its potential to change the world for the better.” This is not only due to the direct financial contribution of the industry, but also the transitional effects IT enables throughout all other sectors and the ability of IT to create employment.

Employment growth amongst the IT professions has consistently, outstripped that for workers as a whole in recent years giving rise to persistent reports of IT skills shortages. However despite this, IT recruiters are generally failing to attract individuals from key societal groups to take up IT positions - most notably women, the disabled and older workers.

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, has produced the definitive state-of-the-nation report on the equality and diversity employment in the UK IT workforce.

Our findings are concerning, not only from an societal perspective, but also from an economic one.

When we’re constantly being reminded that there is a digital skills gap, we ask ‘does that gap really exist when we have the potential to provide gainful employment with well rewarded and challenging careers for those currently outside of the IT labour market?

The first step is to understand the scale and nature of the problem and we invite you to explore this with us at the launch of our report.
