Speaker: Dr Robert Farley

There has been a considerable acknowledgement of the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM professions over recent years; however, the number of visible LGBTQ+ scientists is still low, particularly in the physical sciences and engineering. This talk will consider possible reasons for this low representation, the specific challenges faced by LGBTQ+ scientists and engineers, and potential ways to address them. Most of all it aims to increase understanding of what it means to be an LGBTQ+ scientist.

Speaker Details:
Dr Robert Farley spent the more than a decade as an academic research chemist specialising in Electron Magnetic Resonance. He then retrained as a radiotherapy physicist and is now a Consultant Clinical Scientist and the Head of Medical Physics at the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Director of the Professional and Standards Council and the LGBTQ+ Network Mentor at the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.
