Speaker:
Ralph Ferneyhough, Senior Lecturer, University of Chester

Details:

Take a trip both back and forward in time, with a whistle-stop tour of the first fifty years of computer gaming, and a speculative look at what the next fifty years will bring. See how home entertainment formats have brought us from black and white blocks and simple bleeps, right through to 4K photorealistic images delivered alongside multi-channel audio - and have a chuckle at some of the failures along the way. Then, imagine what the future will bring, as today's virtual reality starts to blur the boundaries into tomorrow's actual reality, and speculate on the implications such technology might have on the future of the human race itself.

About the speaker:

Ralph graduated from the University of Keele in 1992, and, following two years of postgraduate studies, embarked on a career in games development, working first with Sony on the then upcoming PlayStation, then Datel and Studio 33, before spending 14 years at Traveller’s Tales. It is here he was part of the original design team for LEGO Star Wars, the first game in what has gone on to be one of the most successful games franchises of all time.

During this 20 year games development career, he has seen credits on 32 published games (17 of them from the LEGO franchise) which have gone on to sell approximately 120 million copies between them. After being part of the team which has now won five BAFTA awards, he was welcomed into the academy as a full member in 2012.

Joining the University of Chester in 2015, Ralph is now programme leader for the Games Development BSc course there, and maintains an active connection to the industry, working with initiatives run by BAFTA / BAFTA Cymru and Games Wales.
