Target Sectors: Tourism based businesses including accommodation and hospitality sector, outdoor activity providers and those looking to develop interactive content using Augmented Reality.

BCS Members and IT Companies will have an opportunity to network with potential users and speak to someone specialising in this subject.

Digital NMD is a project designed to encourage businesses within the council area to innovate and grow. The project seeks to expose organisations of all types to emerging technologies and to see how technology might enable organisations to develop new products or services.

This might happen within a company or in collaboration with others.

BCS Northern Ireland is delighted to help organise this event.

Speaker: Dr Nick Whitelegg is lecturer at Southampton Solent University and a member of the BCS Animated & Games Development Specialist Group.
Nick is also a keen hill walker and has combined his knowledge of Augmented Reality with his hobby to create a unique application called HIKAR.

HIKAR uses AR to clearly map and highlight path and trail options to hikers and walkers.

Nick will address the wider topic of Augmented Reality and engage in a Q & A session with attendees at the event. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore Montaltos grounds using the HIKAR app.

Topics Nick will cover are.

  • What Augmented Reality is and how it can used in different industries
  • Examples of common Augmented Reality applications you might already know.
  • How Tourism / Hospitably businesses might use an AR app
  • Examples of the resources that are currently available to help to develop and promote an AR based app
  • Things to consider when creating your own AR application
  • Practical demonstration of the HIKAR app

Mourne Walk: Weather permitting Nick hopes to spend some time in the Mournes on Saturday the 21st. BCS members are welcome to join him and if they wish to see HIKAR in a more challenging environment.

Time and start location will be posted on the BCS Northern Ireland Twitter feed @BCS_NI

Please Note The walk is a personal event and neither Nick or the BCS accepts responsibility for your safety. Members etc. must take responsibility for their own safety and the suitability of the conditions, route etc. HIKAR is an app in development and is used as is. BCS and Nick Whitelegg will not accept any responsibility for how you might use the app.
