Using Bitcoin as an illustrative example, this talk will review some of the key requirements and design decisions in major cryptocurrencies. The talk will cover questions such as: How competitive mining works and why it is necessary; how blockchains are different from centralised databases and why they cannot replace each other.

Dr. Thein Tun Loakthar is the Lead Developer at the blockchain company LIFELabs.io and is a Lecturer at the Open University.
