From ICT to the Computing curriculum and ensuring the classroom is diverse and inclusive.

Synopsis

We are currently in the fourth industrial revolution. To enable the population to function effectively now and to prepare future generations with the skills required for new jobs, Computing was introduced as a new subject on the national curriculum to schools in September 2014. Following this introduction, the Royal Society has recently issued a report (Nov 2017) on "The state computing education in the UK".

In her talk, Beverly will reflect on and share her experiences of managing a department through change from the ICT to Computing curriculum, experiences of ensuring that the classroom is diverse and inclusive, areas such as increasing the uptake of girls into Computing, LGBT pupils, SEN pupils and other groups, while ensuring that pupils make progress. She will also look at the recent recommendations from the Royal Society report and consider the impact this will have in schools, along with the processes and strategies that will now be adopted.

Beverly will talk about her personal experiences as a woman who has balanced a career with family life, while succeeding in the field of Computing and changing career from working in corporate IT to being a teacher of Computing. She will also discuss the role that organisations such as Computing At School (CAS) and the BCS have played in her professional development and that of teachers nationwide.
