Synopsis
DWP is undergoing a rapid business transformation and the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the pace of change. We recognise that our work is increasingly digitally-based with most colleagues now part of virtual teams.
To support this, we have focussed on two strands to enable smarter working:
- Making greater use of technology to support new, hybrid and flexible ways of working that enable colleagues to connect, communicate and collaborate.
- Ensuring all our c.100K colleagues have the digital confidence and capability to get the best out of new digital tools.
DWP has up to 40,000 staff working from home (up from 4,000 a year ago) or in the office and we’re working hard to ensure all our colleagues have the digital skills they need. It’s a work in progress and it’s changing the world of work for DWP – and helping us continue to provide vital support to all our customers.
Tony, Ginny and Paul will talk about how the organisation is changing – and where we might go in the future.
About the speaker
Virginia (Ginny) Goodhew
Before joining the DWP in July 2016, my career for 23 years was predominantly with the local authority, initially within mainstream schools, progressing to an active member of SLT teams, with responsibility for behavior and inclusion, also enjoying a period of time working within educational diversity.
I have been a governor of both a High and Primary school for 25 years and work with the NGA (National Governors Association) supporting Schools and Academies to achieve the highest level in Governance and leadership, providing the best outcomes.
I have lead projects for the Princes Trust, working to empower and integrate disaffected young people and adults. Spending time working with the Metropolitan Police to understand why some in society re- offend, and supporting a trial of the Restorative Justice approach, was a hugely humbling experience and only strengthened my resolve to support and help others understand the incredibly difficult circumstance many people find themselves in.
I am now working within DWP- People and Capability, as project manager for the Digital Confidence and Capability Programme. I lead a multi-disciplinary team, from a wide and varied area of the DWP. This project not only looks to support building Digital confidence and empower people to access continuous learning in all its forms, but to re-think a culture, where Digital is just part of what we do.
Paul Brogden
I joined the Employment Service in 1997 having wandered into a job centre looking for work. After 10 happy, “trouble-free” years in a variety of frontline roles in various inner London job centres, I transferred to the Pension Service and then the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
I’ve worked in various strategy/operational policy roles before joining the DWP Digital Academy. I then moved into digital engagement with a focus on social media. I wrote DWP's social media strategy and policy setting out how the Department could make better use of social media as a channel.
I have spent the last two-years as lead for DWP Digital on the Digital Confidence & Capability Project, working with People and Capability Group colleagues to explore how we can build the digital confidence and skills of all our people. I understand the challenges and opportunities presented by the scale and pace of digital transformation and the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had in accelerating this change.
Married to Dawn, I have 3 daughters. I’m a big fan of the Clarets, Lancashire’s Premier football team. When not watching footy, I’m usually on the allotment.
