Synopsis
Sustainability is a subject that affects everybody, and is increasingly influential in shaping industrial strategy. The IT industry is often perceived as less polluting than traditional heavy industry, but the energy and resources consumed in running large-scale computing are significant and cannot be overlooked.
Fortunately, we have the tools to measure and improve the environmental footprint of our workloads.
Cloud computing can enable workloads to be architected with sustainability as a top-level design goal. A sustainable compute platform is necessary, but not sufficient, to achieve our sustainability goals. We must also architect for sustainability, and measure the impact of our choices to drive further improvement.
Computing can then be applied to help solve sustainability challenges, rather than being a root cause.
