This Presentation is part of London Climate Action Week.
The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is the world’s leading demonstration site for testing wave and tidal energy technologies in the sea. To date, more ocean energy devices have been tested at its sites in Orkney than anywhere else in the world. EMEC’s managing director, Neil Kermode, will take you on journey following the developments of the burgeoning ocean energy sector. He’ll cover the progress made to date and challenges being faced, and look at how ocean energy integrates into a more robust energy mix, including its potential to integrate with green hydrogen.
Neil will explain how such developments can support the UK in securing its energy supply, levelling up in peripheral community and invigorating our innovative pedigree, as well as reaching a net zero future.
About the speaker
Neil Kermode has been the Managing Director of EMEC - the world’s leading test facility for wave and tidal energy converters - since 2005 and has overseen the deployment of more marine energy technologies in the seas around Orkney than has been deployed at any other site in the world.
Through Neil’s leadership, EMEC is also pioneering the development of a hydrogen economy in Orkney and is Project Director for the ReFLEX Orkney which is seeking to develop an integrated, affordable, low-carbon energy system for the future.
Prior to working at EMEC, Neil worked as a project developer of a potential tidal scheme, following six years at the Environment Agency dealing with regulation and development issues.
Neil is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Chartered Environmentalist. He has spoken on marine energy and green hydrogen extensively in the UK and internationally and is passionate advocate for a sustainable energy future.
