Synopsis
This talk will focus on the use of robotics in challenging environments, based on work at the UK Atomic Energy Authority centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE). A challenging environment is one in which people cannot work because conditions make it impossible or unacceptable. These conditions are found in nuclear, and petrochemical facilities, space exploration, construction and mining, to name a few. The technical challenges to overcome include high radiation, extreme temperatures, limited access, operation in vacuum and magnetic fields. This talk will focus on developing robotic hardware, software and training, to deliver safer and faster maintenance and operational activities in hazardous environments. It will also touch on the digital tools developed to visualise complex robotics.
