Synopsis

Applicants use AI in their job applications to improve their chances. HR uses AI to filter out applicants who use AI in their applications. No one gets hired.

This talk tries to answer 3 questions based on 30 years of working at a senior technical level in the IT industry and coaching Computer Science students.

1) What parts of the career coaching do we need to do better?
2) What career wisdom can we share with young people?
3) What’s next?

About the speaker

Dr Clive King is an academic/industry hybrid. After 5 years at Aberystwyth as a UNIX systems administrator and A.I. research, he spent 27 years working for Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems and Oracle in technical roles, including 12 years as the Engineering Liaison for Bloomberg, Thompson Reuters and Apple.

Clive was the process when there was not a process, integrated 971 fixes /improvements and visited 421 customers on bug hunting missions. He has been a PhD examiner and a BCS academic accreditation committee member.

He retired from Oracle in 2023 and after a too short period of going feral, he now works on a part time basis for a Dutch technology firm and the management consulting firm Kepner-Tregoe. He is proud to hold the title of honorary lecturer for the Computer Science Department at Aberystwyth. After 7 successful events, he has retired as the TEDxAberystwyth curator and is running the first BSidesAberystwyth Cybersecurity conference in November.

Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.
