Synopsis

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly shaping the way we live, work, and make decisions. In this session, curated by Amirthavarshini Vimaleshwara Raja and Abinaya Sri Arunkumar, we explore both the opportunities AI offers and the growing concerns surrounding its development and use. AI is already helping drive innovation across areas such as healthcare, business, and data-driven decision-making. However, as these systems become more powerful and accessible, many people are also worried about how they might be misused or developed without proper oversight. Concerns around bias, privacy, misinformation, and the broader impact of automation are becoming more visible in public discussions about AI.

In this talk, we look at AI from both a technical and societal perspective. Through practical examples, we discuss how AI systems work, where they create value, and what ethical challenges they introduce. We also explore the importance of responsible AI practices, including transparency, accountability, and emerging approaches to governance and regulation.

As students working in the field of Artificial Intelligence, we believe that understanding both the benefits and risks of AI is essential. AI is ultimately a tool, and its long-term impact will depend on how thoughtfully it is developed and managed. This session aims to encourage open discussion about how AI can evolve in ways that are not only innovative, but also trustworthy and acceptable to society.

Questions Addressed in the Session

  • What opportunities does AI offer in areas such as innovation, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making?
  • What ethical and societal challenges does AI raise, including issues of bias, fairness, privacy, and automation?
  • How can AI systems be monitored and governed so that their benefits are widely shared while risks are managed responsibly?
