Synopsis
This BCS IRMA presentation will introduce Software Asset Management (SAM) as a business practice for managing, controlling, and protecting software assets throughout their lifecycle, driven by three key objectives: compliance (avoiding risks and controlling costs), optimisation (maximizing software license value) and savings (reducing overspend). The presentation demonstrates how effective SAM compares technical software inventory against commercial license inventory to identify over-licensing (potential savings) or under-licensing (legal and financial risks), supported by SAM tools that handle identification, license optimisation, compliance, and contract management. A case study of a major global pharmaceutical company will then be presented to illustrate the implementation challenges and benefits, including establishing centralised governance, improving license visibility, driving cost efficiency, and ensuring audit readiness across 80,000+ employees. The presentation concludes by demonstrating how outsourcing or nearshoring SAM services can achieve further achieve cost reduction, give access skilled talent pools, and improve operational efficiency Various engagement models will also be described such as staff augmentation, managed services, or partial outsourcing.
