Synopsis
The CEOs of the UK’s FTSE350 companies have been urged by the UK Government to look toward "resilience engineering", that is, systems that can anticipate, absorb, recover, and adapt, in the event of IT threats.
Organisations face a growing array of IT related risks. These include cyber-attacks, supply chain and third-party failures, infrastructure failures, coding errors and problematic software updates leading to service outages. These outages have become features of modern life – with
complacency in the face of growing loss of productivity and growth potential.
Why have IT related service outages not yet become central for risk management, training and skills for workforces or for legislation or regulation?
First, dealing with these risks is often framed as about costs rather than opportunity, with little appreciation of liability and reputation damage.
Second, because catastrophic failures are relatively rare, even if risks are acknowledged, addressing them appears to be a low priority.
Third, knowledge about where to begin to manage a journey toward IT resilience and the opportunities stemming from better service availability is often fragmented within organisations – or may be completely absent.
With economic resilience and security now a national priority for the UK Government, the impacts of failing to proactively build resilience are increasingly visible.
A conference to share insights and action plans
This conference brings together risk, resilience, business continuity and IT professionals to share insights on how to improve the availability of services through resilience engineering. The BCS’s ITLF, the BCI, ISRM, NPC and Resilience First, are coming together to develop and share plans for action to improve resilience against IT threats.
This 2-day in person conference will have five sessions: including expert briefings, round table discussion and sharing of action ideas in plenary. The slides used at the event and a capture of the outcomes will be available after the event and shared during subsequent virtual events.
The conference will be held at BCS London on 18th and 19th May 2026.
Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.
This meeting is conducted in accordance with the BCS Code of Conduct for Meetings.
