Synopsis
Computing is often described as a meritocracy, yet who gets in, who progresses and who stays still depends heavily on background, postcode and connections. Now, generative AI is changing the ground beneath us. As tools take on routine tasks that once trained our junior colleagues, the profession risks pulling up the ladder just as it needs a wider range of people.
This talk asks whether social inequality in computing careers is getting better or worse and whether employers and employment interventions across all sectors are ready to take action. Liz will talk about Deloitte’s launch of its latest corporate responsibility initiative in Wales to get leaders talking and to enhance networks between employers, recruits and the government solutions aiming to close the opportunity gaps.

About the speakers
Andy Bellamy is Chair of the BCS South Wales Branch and a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science at the University of South Wales.
Jonny Sammut is the new Chair of the BCS Wales Hub and Director of Digital Services at the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust.
Liz Jones is Partner, Technology Strategy and Transformation at Deloitte.
