Is it for me?

You're ready for CEng if you:

  • apply your understanding to deliver innovative products and services in an industrial setting
  • demonstrate accountability for project, finance and personnel management in your work
  • have the skill set to develop other technical staff
  • show effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters
  • always bring quality and integrity to your work

What are the requirements?

How do I apply?

There are three routes to achieving CEng registration - our assessors will review your application before advising the most appropriate route to follow.

1. It starts with an application form

The CEng application captures your contact details and information about your qualifications and work experience. You’ll also need to provide a CV/resume covering all your job roles including your current position, and all relevant tasks and responsibilities.

2. Compile your experience statements

As part of your application, you’re required to demonstrate your knowledge and competence in a series of experience statements. Our experience statement form comprises six sections with prompts to help you compile your evidence.

3. Identify a supporter who can validate your competence

Your support should be a manager or a senior colleague or client who has first-hand experience of your work over the last 12 months.

Please speak to your supporter in advance to confirm they consent to verifying your application and for BCS to hold their details for the purposes of CEng assessment. Their details will be used solely in support of and for the duration of your application and will be deleted once the outcome of your application has been decided.

4. You'll follow one of three assessment routes

There are three pathways to Chartered Engineer status. Once you’ve submitted your application, our assessors will review the information you've provided to determine the best route for you to follow.

When you’ve met the requirements for your chosen route, you’ll be invited to attend a professional review interview (PRI).

  • Accredited route
You can take the standard accredited route to CEng if you hold a qualification accredited by the Engineering Council.

You'll need to provide a copy of your certificate when you apply, which you’ve authenticated by asking a senior colleague to sign it confirming they've seen the original.

Visit www.engc.org.uk to find out if your qualification is CEng accredited.

  • Experiential route
If you don't hold an accredited qualification, this route enables you to demonstrate your core competencies by evidencing your knowledge and work experience.

Our assessors will review your CV and the experience statements you compile as part of your application. Be sure to provide as much detail as possible, including any relevant academic or vocational qualifications that you hold.

If you’re able to offer sufficient evidence, you'll progress directly to your professional review interview.

  • Technical report route
If you’re unable to provide enough clear evidence to support an experiential route to CEng, our assessors may recommend that you prepare a technical report to demonstrate your competence.

You’ll initially be required to draft a two-page synopsis of your proposed project.

Following successful review of the synopsis, you’ll need to submit a full technical report. We'll advise you on the required format and length of your report (between 3,000 and 10,000 words depending on your qualifications and experience).

When you’ve successfully completed your report, you’re invited to attend a technical report interview to demonstrate your understanding in greater depth.

5. Attend a professional review interview

Once you’ve met the requirements for your selected pathway to CEng status, you’re invited to attend a professional review interview (PRI) with our assessors where we’ll explore your knowledge and skills in more detail.

All our interviews are carried out online using conferencing software.

6. What happens when I become CEng?
