BCS has around 69,000 members, with growing influence across government and industry. We are seeking to appoint a Lay member to commence the role in June 2026 for a three-year term of office. 

The Risk, Audit and Finance Committee supports the Trustee Board by providing independent oversight and assurance in relation to financial reporting, risk management, internal control, audit, and related governance matters.

As a Lay Member, you will bring independent insight and constructive challenge to the Committee’s work, contributing to effective decision making and the maintenance of high standards of governance across the Institute.

The role involves contributing professional expertise in finance and/or risk management to Committee discussions, including reviewing and constructively challenging financial reports, budgets, audit findings and risk registers. Lay Members are expected to act at all times in the best interests of the Institute and its charitable objects, while working collaboratively with fellow Committee members

The successful candidates must possess skills to analyse proposals and examine their wider consequences, good communication and presentation skills, with the ability to analyse complex proposals and assess their wider implications.  

It is desirable that candidates are qualified accountant with strong financial and/or risk management expertise and will be expected to provide independent, objective challenge and oversight across the Committee’s work programme.

The appointment requires a time commitment of approximately 1.5 days in the month of the meetings. The Risk, Audit and Finance Committee meet quarterly, with three meetings held remotely and one in the BCS Offices in London. The Finance committee meet virtually twice per year. Lay Members will be expected to become BCS Professional Members if they are not already members.
