Deepak Verma CITP MBCS

Meet Deepak Verma CITP MBCS, an Advanced Lecturer in Digital Technologies and Computer Science at Halesowen College, who is leading innovation in digital education and shaping the next generation of computing professionals.

Tell us a bit about where you work and your job role

I am an Advanced Lecturer in Digital Technologies and Computer Science at Halesowen College, where I teach and lead on curriculum development, digital transformation, and the advancement of computing education within Further Education.

I am passionate about driving excellence and innovation across digital education, ensuring that our curriculum not only meets industry needs but also inspires students to become responsible, creative professionals.

My role focuses on helping learners build the technical and professional skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world. I also contribute to qualification and assessment work with Pearson and OCR, ensuring that national computing standards remain current, relevant, and of high quality.

What inspired your career in digital education?

I have always been fascinated by technology and its potential to make a difference in people’s lives. After working in product management and project delivery, I realised my true passion lay in education, helping others understand, apply, and innovate with technology.

Teaching allows me to bring that industry experience into the classroom, encouraging students to think critically, work ethically, and approach technology with curiosity and confidence.

What motivated you to achieve CITP status?

Becoming a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) was an important milestone. It reflects professionalism, credibility, and the ability to apply IT knowledge at a recognised standard. As an educator, it also means demonstrating the same level of professional excellence that we expect our learners to aspire to.

CITP connects my teaching with the standards and expectations of the wider IT profession, ensuring that what I deliver in the classroom aligns with the skills and values needed in today’s digital landscape.

How has being a CITP and MBCS helped you?

Being a professional member of BCS (MBCS) and achieving CITP status has been extremely valuable. It has connected me with a diverse community of IT professionals, educators, and leaders who share a commitment to ethical practice and digital excellence.

It also supports my continuous professional development, allowing me to stay informed about new trends, innovations, and policies shaping the digital sector. For me, BCS represents both a professional home and a source of inspiration.

You also hold Chartered Teacher Status and Advanced Teacher Status. What do these mean to you?

Holding Chartered Teacher (CTeach) and Advanced Teacher Status (ATS) represents my commitment to high-quality teaching, reflective practice, and educational leadership. These designations recognise the impact of professional development and the importance of evidence-informed teaching.

As a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training (FSET) and member of the Practitioner Advisory Group (PAG), I contribute to national discussions on teaching excellence and professional standards. It is rewarding to help shape policy and practice that support educators across the UK.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Looking ahead, I want to continue promoting excellence in digital education and supporting the next generation of computing educators and learners. I hope to play a part in shaping national approaches to computing education and digital skills, ensuring that every learner can access opportunities in the digital economy.

I am also passionate about helping educators engage with professional recognition and chartered status, raising the profile of teaching and its vital role in building a skilled, ethical digital workforce.

Any advice or message for others?

Technology moves quickly, but professionalism, curiosity, and integrity never go out of date. For anyone thinking about becoming CITP or joining BCS, I would wholeheartedly encourage it. The journey strengthens your confidence, connects you with a wider professional community, and helps you contribute to a better, more responsible digital future.

Leadership in education is about empowering others to grow. When we invest in people, we build both real intelligence and lasting impact.
