BCS computing teacher scholarships
As a career choice teaching can suit a lot of different people. For some it’s about improving pupils’ life chances, for others it’s the desire to share a passion for the subject.
For the academic year 2026-2027 a scholarship of £31,000, tax free, is available to support unsalaried trainee secondary school computer science teachers through their year of Initial Teacher Training (ITT).

Application process
The first step in the process is to complete the application form.
Please provide as much detail as possible, as this is the initial stage of assessment.
You can save your progress and return to the form at any time.
Some questions require longer responses and include a word count limit. It may be helpful to draft your answers in a separate document before entering them into the form, to ensure they meet the required word count.
If you are successful in the first stage, you will be invited to submit a video presentation on a topic allocated to you.
You will have 10 days to submit your video once the topic is confirmed. Full guidance will be provided on the content and criteria we will be assessing.
Eligibility and entry requirements
The BCS Computing teacher training scholarships programme is a government funded financial incentive to train to teach in England. (If living in Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland at the time of application you must secure a teacher training place at an institution in England. This scholarship is not available to overseas students.)
Please note that you will need to apply for an initial teacher training (ITT) course with a training provider that leads to QTS in addition to applying for the teacher training scholarship with us. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT does not offer ITT courses.
Applicants must meet the bursary eligibility criteria set out in the bursary guidance by the Department for Education:
- Intend to take up a training place on a fee based (non-salaried) secondary teaching course that leads to QTS (pre-16) in Computing / Computer Science starting in September 2026

You’ll also need at least one of the following a bachelor’s degree class 2:1 (honours) or higher, a master’s degree, or a PhD.
We will only consider candidates with a 2:2 or a non-computing-related degree if spaces remain after reviewing all eligible 2:1 applications. -
Be entitled to support under the Student Finance England criteria.
