In our IT careers, we can all expect to be working as part of an IT project team and to have our performance measured by our contributions. Further opportunities will be influenced by our success in such implementations of IT solutions to business problems. BCS Tayside & Fife Branch is offering a series of evening presentations on the Business Life Cycle of IT Projects. Each presentation is self-contained but linked to others in the series as additional perspectives are discussed. As usual these meetings are open to both members and non-members. Students are as always especially welcome.
This series of meetings are all on Mondays at Room 3510, University of Abertay Dundee, Bell Street, Dundee, DD1 1HG. Local street parking is free after 18.00. Catering will be available from 18.30. Please use this time to network and make yourself known to others attending.
For our second meeting, we develop our series of presentations around the business life cycle of projects with an IT Focus.
Chris MacDonald will present the Project Manager’s role. He will share his experience and discuss the complexity, concerns and risks with which the Project Manager has to grapple. How information is presented to them (formally and informally) and how this affects his decisions. This will include the complexity of picking up a project and putting a structure round it to manage it; the overseeing of the project as it goes through its life cycle; the parties the project manager liaises with to get their project delivered; the importance of stakeholder management; the importance of getting everyone to engage with your plans; the uncertainties, market forces, legislation, other things that unexpected affect a project.
Lewis Grant will discuss his role as an IT Recruiter.
He will share his experience of engaging with their clients to understand what resources they are looking for and the complexity, concerns and risks with which the IT Recruiter has to grapple. For example, the complexity of getting a clear understanding of the resources a business/project are looking for; the challenges of identifying within the given timescales resources with the best skills; managing both the relationship with the business and the candidates; high level the challenges presented to the IT Recruiter; managing the relationship with the Project Manager; the uncertainties, market forces, legislation, other unexpected issues that may affect a project. At every BCS meeting there is the chance to network with like-minded professionals both at the buffet before the meeting and towards the end of the meeting. Students and those at the start of their professional career may care to discuss their study choices or career moves with more experienced colleagues.
