Synopsis

Security and privacy are a pain for software! They appear to add very little and take scarce development time from new functionality and improvements. Doubly infuriating is the common situation that where new security and privacy features actually have little benefit. Security professionals tend to be little help in deciding on this: “because I say so” is a typical response when they’re questioned.

But it doesn't have to be like this. In this talk based on his research, Charles will explore how developers and product owners can do risk assessments to justify which security and privacy problems are addressed. He'll discuss the work done in his academic research to get realistic likelihoods for the typical cyber problems, and the huge surprises he found in doing so. Finally, he’ll present ways to turn the security and privacy improvements you do need into positive ‘sales’ features for your stakeholders.

Like it or not, security and privacy are now important for almost every developer. Join us to find out how to limit what you do to what is truly valuable for your stakeholders.
