Synopsis
Time and cost estimation is a fundamental component of project planning.
A range of techniques have been devised to structure the process of estimating implementation effort for software projects. This talk gives an overview of commonly used estimation techniques and the human factors that often influence the process, e.g. bidding low to win a contract.
The accuracy of various techniques, along with commonly seen human-driven influences, are reviewed and compared, based on the publicly available data.
About the speaker
Derek M. Jones
He currently does industrial research on software engineering, using a data driven approach to understand the process of creating software systems. His book "The New C Standard: An economic and cultural commentary" discusses each sentence contained in the language sections of the1999 C Standard.
His book "Evidence-based software engineering: Based on the publicly available data" briefly discusses and analyses all the publicly available software engineering data.
