SYNOPSIS
To many software teams, accessibility is an afterthought. Making our apps work with assistive technologies is pushed down the backlog and forgotten - until it’s time to release, and there’s a panicked rush to get it working, so no-one gets sued under the Equalities Act.
In this talk, we’ll look at how we can do better. We’ll learn about the social model of disability, and how this means we should take responsibility for building accessible experiences. We’ll examine different assistive technologies and the kinds of people who use them, and look beyond just VoiceOver users. And we’ll look at how we can design software to eliminate the barriers that cause disability in the first place.
In short, we’ll leave equipped to see accessibility as another aspect of usability, and build this into our process from the start.

Jonathan Rothwell
Jonathan has a degree from Queen Mary, University of London in Computer Science. He has been working as a software engineer with Zühlke Engineering since July 2015.
Zühlke was founded in Switzerland in 1968 and is now owned by partners. The group can draw on experience gained from more than 10,000 software and product development projects. Zühlke serves customers from a wide field of industries - from machinery and plant engineering, to medical technology and the financial sector. Their mission is "empowering ideas"; they enable their clients to achieve business innovation, from first idea to success in their markets.
