SYNOPSIS
The IT technology vision for the future has pointed to applications around AI and other business problems that are not well served by current computing architectures and programming paradigms. The Von Neuman architectures the IT industry have majored on are capable of tackling a large number of problems and are evolving rapidly under Moore's law but they will not be able to meet the upcoming challenges. This talk will outline the approaches available through quantum and other novel architectures and outline some of the challenges ahead.

SPEAKER BIO
Peter has led the Emerging Technology Programme (ETP) based at the IBM Hursley Laboratory for over 12 years. This is a key element of IBM’s R&D activities. The ETP is charged with accelerating ideas from research into client adoption. The ETP has delivered over 200 client projects and moved a range of research ideas into full-scale software products.
The portfolio of the ETP includes basic research activities which have been conducted both independently and collaboratively with other academic groups, industrial research partners and start-up organisations in the UK and worldwide. He has also contributed to a range of academic research programmes in an advisory capacity. One example of this is chairing the steering committee supporting the Aberdeen University based hub of the Dot.Rural programme.
Peter has a wide understanding of current technology issues and debates gained through training and experiences at IBM. This knowledge has been practically tested through working on a range of client engagements. He now represents IBM on a range of relevant technical forums and standards groups. He is a proven presenter for IBM and regularly briefs external client groups at CIO, CEO and CTO levels. He has presented talks to internal and external groups and provided keynote addresses to audiences of up to 5000 people. His briefing areas include technical subjects such as Big Data as well as business issues associated with the development and exploitation of new and emerging technologies. He has briefed a number of local and central government bodies including the Cabinet Office and the Prime Ministers Strategy Unit.
