Ageing Empathy Suits- With an ageing population, increasing pensionable ages and the relative strength of the "Grey Power ", it is not surprising that design  for the elderly is a hot topic. For those of us more advanced in years, the effect ageing has on our capabilities requires little imagination. But, for younger designers, is often difficult to imagine the changes we undergo with age.

Empathy suits have been developed to give our young designers a glimpse of what it is like for an older individual interfacing with the world around them. The Built Environment group has now purchased two of these suits, which are currently being used for teaching and research.

Come and have a look and you are welcome to have a go at wearing them!!

Alison graduated from Birmingham University with an MSc in Work Design and Ergonomics and is now a registered Ergonomist with nearly 30 years experience in both, long term academic and short commercial research, lecturing, training and design enveloping.  Her particular interests are anthropometrics and working posture.

It is Alison’s belief that our working and living environments should never cause harm. These interests and beliefs resulted in her working for many years as an expert witness for work-related upper limb disorder and other postural personal injury cases. Having seen first-hand the harm that can be done, Alison established Castle Ergonomics in 1995.  They offer a range of ergonomic services concerned with the assessment and improvement of living and working environments. Today they have specialists dealing with Ergonomics, Health and Safety, Vibration and Housing. Their aims are still the same, to provide technical measurement, advice, training and redesign to help minimise risk.
