Urban Traffic Control Onsite Visit

The South Yorkshire Branch would like to thank The Training Foundry for generously sponsoring this event.

Thursday 23 April 2009, 5.30pm - 7.30pm

Peter Bull, Sheffield Traffic Information and Control Manager

The newly opened South Yorkshire Traffic Control Centre is the most visible part of the South Yorkshire Intelligent Transport System (syITS) project.

syITS is intended to provide a centrally controlled traffic management and information system for South Yorkshire, providing high quality public and private transport options for travellers. It will allow Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley to make best use of the transport network, minimise environmental impact, and respond flexibly to incidents and traffic growth. The system is based on a common database structure to the UTMC specification.

syITS updates legacy Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems in Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley, replacing analogue communications with TCP/IP and making use of industry standard hardware and protocols.

The visit will be to the Control Room and Machine Room and include an introduction to the system by Peter Bull.

Peter is the Sheffield Traffic Information and Control Manager and has been manager of the previous Sheffield Urban Traffic Control system for many years. He is now Project Manager for syITS project.
