The Business Relevance of Data Governance

Date:
Tuesday 21 June 2011

Synopsis:

This was our annual joint event with the UK Chapter of DAMA International. We had four speakers.

First up was Kathy Hunter on How Data Governance can Reconcile the Gap between the Business and IT. This session looked at the differences between the two groups and considered why this gap exists, the issues it causes and the ways that data governance can help bridge the gap and provide substantial benefit.

She was followed by Jon Asprey, the Director, Strategic Consulting EMEA for Trillium Software. His presentation was The anatomy of a successful Data Management team. Jon discussed the resources and roles required along with common pitfalls and issues based on the experience of assisting clients in establishing their Data Governance programmes. He also presented proven methodologies to build a robust business case for proactive data management, ensuring any effort is targeted, measureable and supported by the executive level team.

After lunch Brian Hogg of the Army Personnel Data Management Organisation gave a presentation entitled Business Led Data Management. This presentation highlighted the complex issues that the Army faced as it realised that the quality of the personnel data was critical to managing a £4.3 billion manpower budget and outlined its approach to put in place a Data Quality and Management regime to continue improving Army Personnel data quality and put in place governance to maintain standards into the future.

The last presentation of the day was from Neil Harvey of Diversey Inc (Europe). His presentation, A practical implementation of a Master Data Management program, focused on how Diversey have drawn on past experience, advice from consultants and external literature in developing and implementing a practical program to support the Globalisation of Master Data and Information Management for Regulatory Compliance, Sales/Marketing support and decision making.

There was then a lively panel discussion, followed by networking over a glass of wine.
