Network Rail Southeast Map Project

Network Rail’s Group Business Services MBS (Mobile Business Solutions) team helps deliver benefits throughout the rail industry by equipping customers with user friendly, practical and data rich mobile applications.

The project to develop and deliver the Southeast Map app for Network Rail used leading-edge mobile technologies to process and present large amounts of publicly available train running data seamlessly, enabling operational staff to make better informed decisions, enable faster recovery of rail network performance following incidents and provide better quality information to passengers. Its unique value is in the way live data is presented through a simple and recognisable map-based interface.

Information that was previously delivered in a complex and inefficient way is now available at a glance to a wider customer base, reducing costs and improving insight, responsiveness and communication with passengers. From the initial customer requirement the project used agile delivery techniques to provide a proof of concept, engage the customer through collaboration, manage complex data and undertake testing to deliver a highly innovative product.


Steve Bell
Steve is the Mobile Business Solutions (MBS) manager, accountable for delivery of the growing portfolio of work for customers across Network Rail and the rail industry. Steve joined Network Rail in 2010 having completed the Network Rail MSc in Programme & Project Management at the University of Warwick, prior to which he was a project manager at Warner Brothers for 11 years. Over the past 18 months he has been instrumental in building the MBS team, developing effective commercial and customer-driven relationships, and establishing an impressive track record of delivery.

Ben Unwin
Ben manages business change projects and communications within the Mobile Business Solutions (MBS) portfolio. He has a background in training, consultancy and project management and prior to joining Network Rail in 2010 worked as a senior project manager on a number of programmes within the healthcare sector. He specialises in delivering creative content to engage customers, support programme objectives and embed change.
