Mike Hainey

Mike Hainey will discuss the development and implementation of HM Revenue & Customs strategic risk engine Connect. It has enabled the department to implement an intelligence-led approach to tackling fraud and evasion. Mike will discuss the project approach taken and how the resulting business changes and IT solution increased tax yield at HM Revenue & Customs by £2 billion to date.

About the Speaker:

Mike Hainey leads the HMRC's Risk and Intelligence Service Data Analytics Team. The team delivers an analytics service that provides insight into the UK's individual and business population to drive a range of interventions in response to identified customer behaviours. The team has responsibility for the development and delivery of the Connect system, HMRCs strategic risk engine, that networks together over 1 billion items of departmental, third party and commercial data and provides an effective platform for profiling and analysis.

In November 2012 HMRC won a trio of innovation and big data awards from both industry and government for the Connect project.

Mike has previously worked in both HMRC and at the Serious Fraud Office leading teams responsible for providing digital forensic services to support the investigation of some of the UK's most complex and high profile frauds. He has acted as an expert representative on a number of national bodies as well a representing the UK on the G8 High Tech Crime Sub Group.
